MSA 1000

Hi, I have MSA 1000. with all the slots full with HDD.

I have 4*146 GB HDD and remaining 300GB HDDs.
I have 2 arrays. One array with 146 GB and another with 300GB. 146 GB array has 2 logical drives. Now the problem disk size extention for both the 146 GB HDD. I dont have any slot free for put the HDD. What is the best way to extend the size?

Re: MSA 1000

Without knowing the configuration of your MSA1000, it is difficult to advise, but you may look at the following.
1) Can you create a LUN, in the size you need, on the 300GB group and then copy the date from the original LUN to the newly created one?
2) If all of your space is used then adding an additional shelf of disks might be your only way to go.
3) If you have lots of room in the 300GB side, move all your LUNs from the 146GB group to the 300GB group, remove the 146GB drives and replace with 300GB drives.
As you can see, many options, all dependent on your configuration.

Re: MSA 1000

Is it possible to remove all 146GB and put 300GB. FIrst remove 146GB and put 300GB and wit for rebuilding and second 146GB etc.

Re: MSA 1000

Yes you can do that, but I would remove all 146 and then replace with all 300GB.

Re: MSA 1000

Will I get free space after removing all 146GB to 300GB online?

Re: MSA 1000

Yes you will have more room since you will be using 300GB drives instead of 146GB drives. But, remember, you will need to copy the data from the 146GB drives, ideally onto the existing 300GB drives, remove the 146GB drives, replace with 300GB drives and then copy the data back.

Re: MSA 1000

I think , u didnot get the idea how I am going to do.

I will not remove all the HDDs at a time.
I will replace one by one HDD.

Once the rebuilding is completed for first HDD with the existing logical drive , I will repplce the other one.So no need to copy back the data. Then I will replace the other one and so on. this is what I am going to do. Will it make any diffence on the space.
At last all the HDD wil be with 300GB. By doing so would I get any free space from the 300GB disks

Re: MSA 1000

Once you are done this process and replaced ALL of the 146GB drives, you will then have the extra space available. You will not see all the new space until you have replaced all of the 146GB drives with 300GB drives.
