MSA1000 and Sanbox 5600

(I posted this a week ago in the business support forums by mistake, meant to put this here)

I have an HP MSA1000 raid who's "MSA SAN Switch 2/8" failed, so I'm trying to move it to an existing QLogic SANbox5600 (licensed for all 20 ports, running v5.latest firmware), using the MSA FC passthrough module.

The SANbox is not recognizing the MSA as a 'target', but its coming up 'unknown', and the various hosts (3 HP servers using QLA23xx adapters that were formerly connected via the MSA's own switch) aren't seeing the storage on the MSA (the linux servers see the MSA itself but not the associated logical drives)... yes, I've created the appropriate 'soft' zones on the SANbox using the endpoint WWN's. If I direct plug any of the hosts into the MSA1000 storage, it sees the associated LUNs just fine. A HP DL380 Windows 2003 server on SANbox sometimes sees its logical drives, but not reliably, again, if I direct connect the MSA1000 to the Windows server, it works fine.

FYI, this SANbox also serves a Sun SE3510FC storage, and 6 or 7 Sun and other servers, so I know it works, and I know how to configure it.... Everything attached including the MSA is 2Gbps ...

Anyone ever use a MSA1000 w/ a SANbox 5600 switch? QLogic mentions the MSA1000 as a supported device. Is there some special configuration I need to use on the sanbox (the MSA's port is current set to GL, which as I gather is automatic F or E port... this works with all my /other/ FC devices)

Re: MSA1000 and Sanbox 5600

Hi,
a) it is very probable to have the nteroperability issue between the Brocade OEM 2/8 and SANBOX 5600 (you can try to set the 2/8 to interoperability mode 1, but here something similar was not successfull:

AND

b) the SANBOX firmware image and MSA FC SAN IO module firmware incompatibility
the pain is one part of the reality

Re: MSA1000 and Sanbox 5600

the MSA no longer has the 2/8 switch in it, as that died. I replaced the FC passthrough module and thats what I'm trying to connect to the SANbox...

whats this sanbox firmware image and msa san io module fimware incompatibility?

Re: MSA1000 and Sanbox 5600

it is the sanbox fabric OS version and the firmware of the MSA FC IO module possible incompatibility...

Re: MSA1000 and Sanbox 5600

k, any idea where I can look to see what versions I should use? is it 'safe' to just go ahead and update to 'latest' on both the sanbox and msa, or will that still not solve these issues?

I've already updated the sanbox from its original 5.0.0.31.0 to the latest 5 series, 5.0.1.10.0, but i know there's a 6 and 7 series, which will require I switch from SANsurfer to some new qlogic management tool.

Re: MSA1000 and Sanbox 5600

ok, the MSA 1000 is running v 7.00
and I just updated the QLogic SANbox 5600 to 7.4.0.13.0, which is AFAIK, the latest of both.

So, basically, I'm hosed, this switch and storage are completely incompatible and there's nothing I can do about it? I have to buy the rinkydink 2/8 for like $2500 replacement cost if I hope to use this 28 drive boat anchor again with the three servers whom its hosting storage for? that or I start messing with iscsi?
