MSA1000 temperature overheat

I was receiving this message in my IML:

"External Storage System Overheating (Chassis SGM051627V, Slot 1, Zone Unknown, Location Storage, Temperature Unknown)"

I couldn't find any problems with fans.
This has stopped appearing now but was wondering why it appeared in the first place.

Re: MSA1000 temperature overheat

Hi,

Didn't you have a cooling problem in your computerroom around the MSA1000??

Re: MSA1000 temperature overheat

My computer room has been at an ambient temperature of 22°C.

There has not been much change around the room. As in there are not really any microclimates as we have underfloor air con blowing cool air upwards through the racks and units blowing cool air downwards too.

Re: MSA1000 temperature overheat

Carl,
Next time this happens can you pull the power supply of the MSA1000 and look for rev number, i.e. A1, B1.

Re: MSA1000 temperature overheat

I found that HP engineering advisory was recently released about false temperature readings on that model.

Basil

Do you have a link to this advisory?

Re: MSA1000 temperature overheat

Unfortunally, no. I found reference to internal advisory (with its number) on Service Partner Network, but advisory itself is not available to me.

Re: MSA1000 temperature overheat

Carl,
The Advisory is forthcoming. When the problem occurs, use cli and issue >show globals. If the temp reads over 200c then the problem lies with the power supplies FW.

Re: MSA1000 temperature overheat

John,

Thanks very much I'll monitor it. It hasn't happened for 6 days.

Is this the HP Array Configuration Utility CLI that is installed on the Server OS? I tried this command "show globals" but it said invalid command.

Re: MSA1000 temperature overheat

No, the controller cli.
You will not see this issue unless the temp falls below 25c.

Re: MSA1000 temperature overheat

John, will this advisory include solution?
One of our customer regullary gets overheat warning.
Can HP Partner get such engineering notes or they internal to HP only?
Thank you!

Re: MSA1000 temperature overheat

I have got this error again and pulled the supply out of the MSA, it quotes "A1" on the HP sticker.

I forgot to use the cli command though.

One of the two cluster nodes hung when booting to the windows GUI.

Re: MSA1000 temperature overheat

It shouldn't impact your performace. The msg is just a nuisance.
Verify the rev on the other supplies. I would call HP support, they will replace the Power Supply.

Re: MSA1000 temperature overheat

John

I have done the show global and the PSU1 is reading as 202 degrees celsius.

The other is ok at 22 degrees.

I have yet to call HP Support as I have another MSA1000 that I can swap parts.

This problem seems to have shutdown the Array though as I cannot access any partitions configured.

Thanks for your help.

Re: MSA1000 temperature overheat

From the MSA FW perspective, it should shutdown. I never could get my hands on a rev A1 supply to verify shutdown.

Carl, don't hesitate to request replacement of the A1 supply.

Re: MSA1000 temperature overheat

John

Many thanks for all your instruction.

I'm going to call HP when I get a spare minute.

I swapped the two PSU's with others I had boxed up and the new one's are revision D4.

They are working fine so far.

Re: MSA1000 temperature overheat

John

Thanks for all your help I finally managed to get HP to ship me two new PSU's.

Though that was a week ago and nothing has turned up yet.

Regards

Carl
