MSA20 Logical Drive

Hi All, I would like to create a logical drive (RAID 6 ADG), using 12 500GB disks. So the logical drive should have 5TB of space. When I try to create the logical drive the system says that I cannot create logica drive with more than 2TB of space. Can I do something? Best regards.

Re: MSA20 Logical Drive

Hi,

You don't mention what RAID controller your MSA20 is hooked up to, but I'll assume a SmartArray 6400.

If you take a look at the QuickSpecs here:

http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/11587_div/11587_div.html

You'll see in the Technical Specifications section that a logical drive can only go up to 2TB...

If you want something larger then you'll have to do something at the operating system level.

Hope this helps,

Regards,

Re: MSA20 Logical Drive

Thanks a lot for you very quick reply! Are you able to suggest an Array Card in order to create a 5tb logical drive? I'm using Windows 2003 and it is able to manage very large partition.

Re: MSA20 Logical Drive

Hi,

It doesn't appear that any of the current parallel SCSI SmartArray controllers support logical drives > 2TB. The SAS controllers do, but that doesn't help if you've already bought the disks...

I guess you could purchase an additional 2 drives and then create 3 logical units which you can combine into one drive within Windows.

5 x 500 Raid-5 = 2000
5 x 500 Raid-5 = 2000
4 x 500 Raid-5 = 1500

Not the best use of the space though :-(

Hope this helps,
