Mixing drive spindle speeds in an array

I have a new DL 380 G4 server to build using 2 x Ultra 320 SCSI drives attached to the 6i controller. The 2 drives I have been supplied with are different spindle speeds, 10K and 15K. Is mixing different spindle speeds in the same mirror or RAID 5 array supported?

Re: Mixing drive spindle speeds in an array

Yes you can, but the performance will be degraded/reduced/limited by the slowest disk in the array.

If it is a new server, can you ask to you provider to supply two 15K rpm disks?

Re: Mixing drive spindle speeds in an array

Actually the spindle rotational speed effects the access and write speeds to the drive itself and is transparent to the controller. Once the command is sent to the drive, how fast the drive completes the command is not a concern to the controller.
End result is one drive will complete processes 33% faster than the other. Doesn't hurt anything but the controller/system is always waiting for the slower to complete.
