Modular Smart Array 500 System

I plan to purchase the Modular Smart Array 500 System to attach to my HP integrity rx4640. And I was wondering to achieve the best I/O performance should I go with four 70gb HD or should eight 36gb HD, or perhaps it does not make a difference.

Cesar:

You don't say if you are considering the 10k or 15k disks: I'll assum you are comparing alternatives of the same speed (e.g 4 x 72Gb @ 15k or 8 x 36Gb @ 15k)

In general you will get better performance out of more disks (not GENERAL). Basically you have more physical arms moving & getting to the data quick on more, smaller, disks. However, clearly, more smaller is more expensive: 4 x 72Gb 15k (or 10k) would be quite good, particular if you fully utilise the various RAID options for speed & resilience.

Hope that helps
