Moving Disks from a VA7410 to another VA7410.

I have a customer who wants to move three DS2045 fully populated with disks from a VA7410 to another VA7410.
Can I just move them or must I,previously,do something with the disks...??
I suspect that they are marked to belong to the first VA7410 and must be reinitialized or something like that.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hi

If you are doing it online, you can just move them.
VA will detect them as foreign disks, then you can include them with armcfg command.

You can do this online.
Will you stop the first VA7410? So that you don't loose data?

The relevelling of the data on the second VA7410 can take also some time if you add 45 disks.

PS : Point for answers are always appreciated

Re: Moving Disks from a VA7410 to another VA7410.

You will destroy all data on the "old" VA, because you will remove a huge number of disks. For this reason, I would format the "old" array before and after the disk shelf removal.

Now about the adding of disks.

You should connect the empty shelf first, then the disks one by one (wait some minutes before inserting the next). Everytime you insert a disk, the array will be busy to build the new loop, initialize, check status etc...
You need to manually include the disks, because they were in use before.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: Moving Disks from a VA7410 to another VA7410.

We will stop the first VA7410 and it wil be removed so only the second VA7410 remain operative, before we stop the first VA7410 I will update the FW on the three DS2045 an all disks.
The first VA7410 has no been updated.
The second VA7410 has the latest controller FW so I want to have everything at latest revision.
After the update I will unplug the three DS2045 from the first VA7410,pull out all disks on them, add all three DS2045 to the second VA7410 an add the disk one at the time.
I only have a doubt:
Will the second VA7410 "see" the disks without doing anything more...??

Re: Moving Disks from a VA7410 to another VA7410.

Hi

There is no need to insert disks one by one.
You can apply the fully populated enclosures online.
We did this several times without any problems (on-site HP CEs as well).
The disks will be identified as foreign immediately and you have to include them with armcfg.

Re: Moving Disks from a VA7410 to another VA7410.

Thanks to all of you.
I added the three disk cabinets to the second VA7410 and everything is working correctly.
