Need to add two HDD with existing

Hi Dear,

We have a storage box named HP storage works MSA 20 where 9 (Nine) 750 GB Hard disk is Raid 0 Configured and Three volumes in windows 2003 server. And 1(One) 750 GB in Spare.

Total storage shown: 4191.63 GB in windows volume D:, F: & G drive and 3.5 TB valuable data exits

What will happen?

1. If we delete the whole Nine disks raid volume and added another two to make it 11(eleven) hard disk and create raid5 volume again then existing data will be deleted or not.

2. Is it possible to extend the exiting raid volume with extra Two (2) 750 GB hard disk?

3. If we take exiting 3.5 TB of data to ultrium 4 tape drive then is it feasible to secure on the tape to rely successful restore.

Pleae suggest.

Hi,

1) data will be deleted.
2) as I understand it should be fine to extend your volume, where is the problem in that, if you mean to extend then from the server side for windows you can do that online using diskpart.
3)it should be fine to restore your data if your backup was successful

Re: Need to add two HDD with existing

hi,

first of all if this valuable data and you have not taken a backup of it to tape please do so as soon as possible and before doing anything else. if this is raid 0 if you lose a disk you will lose all the data on the array, the spare drive is of no use in this case.
if you have battery backed write cache on your smart array controller and you sdd the extra disks you should be able to migrate the raid type from 0 to 5, do not delete the existing volume first ! , with bbwc you could also extend your existing raid 0 volume but be aware as already mentioned you have no redundancy with raid 0
