Planned shutdown of EVA4100: Three disks with red status (currently waitung for HP...)

Hi,

due to a planned power outage we needed to shutdown all our EVAs today. While our EVA5000 and 4400 did come up without any problems after we turned them back on, we now have a problem with our 4100. After turning the enclosures on (there are four), three of the 48 disks have red status indicators. Since in the worst case two failed disks could cause all Vraid5 disks to be destroyed, we have not turned the controller on and and have called HP. They are not sure what to do but noticed that it might has something to do with the meta data / quroum disks having a problem. We are now waiting for a level 2 technican to show up here.

Anyone here with suggestions that might help? Of course we need to wait for HP and only can do what they tell us, however any information is highly appreciated.

btw: everything else on the enclosures is green and there are no errors shown on the back of them.

Hi,

Is the First HDD on the Enclosures RED??

If so, This is the normal Behaviour, if both Controllers are Power down and powered on all Enclosures.

You can power on Controllers one by one and once Controller Loop Initialized these RED will go off and EVA function normally.

Is those are different location, try to Refix the HDDs and check. If those disks are from Different RSS then it wont be any issue of Data Loss sbujected to no Vraid 0 Volumes.

thanks for your reply. Yes, it were the first disks in three enclosures. When the level 2 HP technican called us he told us that this is normal behaviour. He also told us that this was part in earlier HP docs but for some reason is no longer documented. Even the HP first level support wasn't aware of this...

Since we didn't know this and our EVA4400 and EVA5000 didn't show this symtoms we really had a bad feeling. Actually, the current EVA 4x00 user guide clearly states to wait for all status indicators to be green before powering on the controllers.

After we knew this is normal, we powered on both controllers and everything was working fine.

Is there a document which discribes why this is the case with the EVA4100 but not the 5000 and 4400 i.e.?

Hi,

This will not be observed on EVA 5000/8000 series EVAs.

I have observed on EVA 4400 also which is not initialised Systems.

Here is my assumption but i dont have support documents are there. Except 5k/6k/8k series all other EVA will use the Cascade method in which FC Loop will not be complete unless one of the Controller Powered on.

For 5k/6k/8k where as FCAL will be used means all enclosures connected to FC Loop Switches so when u powered on enclosures and loop switches loop will be initialised from FC Loop Switch to Disk Enclosures.

Hi,
As the previous noter informed you this is normal for some systems.
To be specific:
All UNSWITCHED (no backend loop switches)EVA's do the same thing but NOT 4400/6400/8400.
You should see that the LEFT most drive in all enclosures will be amber/red until you turn the ctrls on and they get so far through the power up sequence. If the system has backend loop switches then the loop is completed between the shelf and the loop switch so no amber/red LED on left most drive. You probably had a bit of a noise from the EMU's as well, this is also normal for what you described. The noise will stop when you power on the ctrls and the loop completes and the amber/red disk drive "fail" LEDs go out
