RAID(1+0) or RAID10 in EVA6400

Hi,
We have a new EVA6400 command view 9.2 install there.According to RAC requirement we want to do RAID(1+0) or RAID10. Through Command view 9.2 we have the options to select RAID0 or RAID1 or RAID5 or RAID6. Please confirm is it possible to do RAID10 here. if yes how.

Hi there

Here is the list of supported raid by eva6400

Vraid 0, Vraid1, Vraid 0+1, Vraid5, Vraid0+5, Vraid 6 & Cross Vraid Snaps

Thanks. But in Command view 9.2 we have only options to select RAID0 or RAID1 or RAID5 or RAID6. According the doc its supports Vraid 0+1. so how can select it. please mention.

VRAID-1 implements 'striped mirroring'. If Oracle calls that RAID(1+0) or RAID10, then you're fine.

In your case "RAID1" is OK... as oracle required RAID(1+0) for redo logs & cnrt files.

Thanks. According to Oracle RAC requirement we have to give a common LUN to two server. Here i attached the file in detail information. if i select RAID1+0, i will get 50% usable space.
Now i have 7TB space in EVA6400. So after RAID1+0 i have 3.5TB is it? then as per doc how can i select backup space?

Where does it say that you have "7TB space" ?
I ask, because some outputs are "vdisk sizes" depending on the free space in the disk group and the desired VRAID level. Can you give a screenshot (small .JPG file please - no .DOC or .DOCX).

If the EVA has one disk group and 7TB free space, you can create virtual disks in VRAID-1 up to about 3.5TB.

Careful! There must be at least 5GB of free space in the disk group and do not forget to choose a "protection level" of single. The EVA does not have dedicated spare disks and the "protection level" is the virtualized equivalent.

However, after you have created up to 3.5TB virtual disks in VRAID-1, there is no space left for backup-to-disk.

we have total 146X72=10512GB space in EVA6400.we created 1 disk group and we found total space around 9TB. is it ok?? now from this 9TM according to doc we already assign LUN with RAID5 to the servers except Two RAC nodes. For Oracle RAC we need 3TB with RAID10 and 6TB with RAID5. so is it possible?? please confim.

OK, so you have 72 disk drives of '146GB', right?


146GB is "hardware GigaBytes" (base 1000), but CV-EVA uses "software GigaBytes (base 1024).

I've checked a '146HWGB' disk and it had 286749488 blocks of 512 byte/block.

286749488*512/1024/1024/1024 = 136.73 SWGB

From that we have to remove the capacity of 2 disks for sparing in case a disk drive fails.
(its 2 [two], not 1 [one] due to the way VRAID-1 within the EVA works)

total capacity: 70*136.73SWGB = 9,571 SWGB


Unless I've miscalculated, the existing servers use 1,550GB of VRAID-5.
That makes 1550*1.25 = 1,937.5 SWGB being used in the disk group.

Which leaves 7,633.5 SWGB of free space.

The oracle data vdisks need 3,000GB of VRAID-1 space.
That makes 3000*2 = 6,000 SWGB being used in the disk group.

Which leaves 1633.5 SWGB of free space in the disk group.

Now you need an edditional of 6,000GB in VRAID-5 for backups.
That makes 6000*1.25 = 7,500 SWGB being required in the disk group.

So you need an additional of 5866.5 SWGB space in the disk group.

(7500-1633.5)/136.73 = 42.9057

You need at least 44 additional disk drives.

For optimal processing, disk groups should be run with multiple of 8 disk drives and
the capacity of an additional two disk drives should be kept free.

That makes an additional 48 disk drives.
