Removing disks from EVA6100

Hi,
We want to delete data and take out all disk drives from one shelf. Is this the way to do it.

Delete vdisks in diskgroup
Delete diskgroup
Do a remove on each drive and take them out

An empty disk shelf, will that be a problem for the cab buss addressing?
Will HP be alerted through EVA monitoring when disk drives are taken out of the shelf?

Re: Removing disks from EVA6100

Be aware that when you delete data from the server data is not actually overwritten, you just delet the references.
Also if you delete your disk group data still remains on the disks.
Thus if you then remove drives from the EVA one by one they will still contain data.

Of course it would be very hard to get meaningful data out of them but it is theroretrically possible.

So in order to be absolutely sure that your data has been invalidated you need to overwrite it! (According to DoD several times with changing patterns)

You can do this youself with OS commands, specialized software or buy it as a service from HP or an HP partner.

Will an empty disk shelf cause any problems for cab addressing?

Re: Removing disks from EVA6100

The CAB will not be affected.

But Command View will not show the enclosure if there are no disks.

If you want to further operate the EVA I suggest distributing the remaining disks equally so that no enclosure will be empty.

Re: Removing disks from EVA6100

I recall reading somewhere that having 0 disks in a shelf is a bad idea.
If not for the CAB but probably for the FC-loop.

Re: Removing disks from EVA6100

The FC loops will be OK due to the IO modules.

Without disks the enclosure wont be seen by Command View and the EMU FW will not be upgraded automatically with the controllers.

So having no drives in an enclosure is not a good idea.

Anyway the official HP requirement for the EVAx000 and EVAx100 always was to have 4 disks min per enclosure. But this was not a technical reason.
Technically you are OK with one drive per enclosure.
