S/W RAID5 is possible in LVM

Hi Expert,

I have connected MSA30 to our rx8640 machine, where we don't have any RAID controler card. is it possible to configure S/W RAID5 in LVM? Other solution also.

hi,

for an answer to that see this thread :-

is there a reason you don't want to use hardware raid ? the cards are relatively cheap and you won't have the processing overhead associated with host based raiding.

Hello,

RAID 5 is not possible with LVM. You could use VxVM (Veritas Volume Manager), which supports RAID5 volumes. They can coexist in one operating system instance, at least for HPUX.

Another option would be to use a HW RAID controller card, such as SA.

Re: S/W RAID5 is possible in LVM

Software RAID5 in general is slow, so why not go with LVM mirroring or even better a smartarray card?

Hope this helps!
