Smart array 5300 raid 5

Hi I have a ml370 g2 witha 5300sa with 3 18.2gb drives raid 5 scsi id 2 has failed
when replaced the array does not rebuild as for some strange reason??

it thinks the failed drive is on scsi port 1 and the 2 working drives are on scsi port 2 is there away of reconfiguring the array to remove drive from scsi port 1 then back onto scsi port 2

Re: Smart array 5300 raid 5

When the RAID volume is degraded, the replacement drive must be inserted into the exact same SCSI port + SCSI ID location as the failed drive inorder for it to be accepted for rebuild. Only after rebuilding has started can you move the drives to different drive bays.

You may also want to verify that the drive that you inserted does not have a failed logical drive stored on it. To do this, invoke ORCA using F8 and check the state of the logical volumes. If you see a failed volume in this list. Chances are it came from the replacement drive. Delete this volume and reboot.

Also, some controllers require a reboot before drive rebuilding will start. Observe the post messages when the BIOS gets to the controllers option ROM.

and nothing happened no lights on disk
checked acu and new disk is scsi port 2 scsi id 2 unassigned and old dis is in raid array as missing on scsi port 1 scsi id 2

Re: Smart array 5300 raid 5

Jason,
I think what may have happened is the cable got moved from the Port1 internal SCSI connector to the port2 connector on the SA5300 after the volume became degraded. On the next power up the controller recoginized the degraded volume and updated the volume configuration on the 2 drives that are present to relocate them to port2.

In this case, the controller f\w has no way of knowing that you also want to move the failed drive to port2 so it left it at the last known location which is port1 ID2. Try moving your internal cable back to port1 on the 5300 controller so that it can find your replacement drive. Once the volume begins rebuilding, the volume configuration on all 3 drives will be updated. After this point, you can move your cable back to any SCSI port on the controller that you want.
