Storageworks 500 help :)

Hey everyone!

This is my first post here, but I use the forums a lot! Very helpfull!

Anyway, straight to the point.

I'm after a bit of advice really.

I'm getting my hands on the Storageworks 500, (just the array enclosure part) I just wanted to know if I would be able to use it on anything other than the control module.

I know you're all going to go "urghhh! Dell" BUT, I have a Dell Poweredge 650 (give to me from a old IT) which I was wondering if I could hook up to the array enclosure?

I am gettting the array enclosure with a HP array card, and, also want to know if this will work in my dell.

Sorry for the long post, but I don't (like everyone) want to waste my money on buying it, if it will only work with the control module, or HP servers only!

Thank you all in advance for your help! :)

Re: Storageworks 500 help :)

Hey!

Is the MSA StorageWorks 500? A G1 or a G2?

Should work fine with an HP array card - like SA-532 is mentioned in the quickspecs of the G1 .

Which card are you getting?

For the G1 you have the supported controllers/OS in the quickspecs:

For G2:

You would also be able to find more information about compatibility on HP SPOCK.

Re: Storageworks 500 help :)

Hi there,

Thank you for your help..

Im not sure what card it is yet, I will post back when I find out!

It is the G2 version, not the G1.

Also, sorry for reposting it again. I created a new thread, so please ignore that one!

Re: Storageworks 500 help :)

So, I managed to find out what the controller card is.

The only info I can get on it is the number - HP 305415-001.

Hope this helps!

Re: Storageworks 500 help :)

http://partsurfer.hp.com/Search.aspx?SearchText=305415-001

305415-001 Smart Array 642 Ultra320 Controller with 64MB cache - 64-bit, 133MHz, PCI-X PC board - Does not include a cache module or a battery

So that looks great!
The 642 is what is in the MSA500 G2 as well if I remember the quickspec above.

Should be good to go!

I haven't configured one of these but I presume it's about same as the MSA1000 which you configure it with ACU. You may be able to do it from the ORCA - in POST.

Re: Storageworks 500 help :)

That's great news!

But, one problem I have just realized.

My server only takes half length cards, not full length.

Can you recommend any half length HP ones that would work.

Sorry for going on. I do appreciate the help!

Re: Storageworks 500 help :)

no problemo :)

"Q10. What adapters does the MSA500 G2 support?

A10. The MSA500 G2 supports the Smart Array 642 as its adapter. It is not compatible with the Smart Array 532 or Smart Array 5i. "

Doesn't look good mate.

Re: Storageworks 500 help :)

That's a real shame!

I shall see if I can get my hands on a half decent 2U or more server, they tend to have a lot more room!

Thank you for help mate, saved me buying it (for the moment) and tearing my hair out wondering why its not working!

Now, for your help, I'm told I have to give you points? How do I do this?
