Unable to update firmware on MDS600

Setup:

C7000 chassis with 2 3G SAS BL switches and 4 MDS600 disk systems.

Issue:

Can see the MDS600's in VSM, but they're listed with a status message saying "HP MDS600 Disk System at Port:71 Box:1 is degraded because the firmware on the I/O module is not supported. Flash the I/O module to the latest firmware version." On maintain tab for MDS600, I'm only able to view "More information" and status alerts, there is no option for firmware upgrade.

I followed the suggestions listed here:

http://h30499.www3.hp.com/t5/Disk-Array/3G-SAS-switch-to-MDS600-unable-to-connect-due-to-SSA70-path/m-p/4674689#M35652

but I get "no device has been updated" when running the firmware update sequence from debug mode. The blade in question has a P700M Smart Array controller that is correctly portmapped to the device bay.

Any help appreciated.

Re: Unable to update firmware on MDS600

Hi Are

I don't know if you still have to use the old method, if you are behind.
You could try, to use FW DVD 9.20.
And see if you can get it updatet that way.

Do remember that all I/O mudules must be connected and upgraded.

I did it with P700m, and SAS.
If you still have to do it the old way, you must downgrade the SAS switches.

Re: Unable to update firmware on MDS600

Yeah, everything is connected properly. But I spoke to HP Support, who said the only way to do this would be to fit a non-blade server with a compatible controller (P212, 411 or 812 if I remember correctly). Blade with P700M just wouldn't work.

So I ordered a P212. Should be here tomorrow, so I'll report back then.

Re: Unable to update firmware on MDS600

I did it on 2 systems from blades:

MDS600 1.28 > 2.60
MDS600 1.28 > 2.60
SAS 3 1.1.8.0 > 2.2.4.0
SAS 4 1.1.8.0 > 2.2.4.0

Re: Unable to update firmware on MDS600

It's been more than 1 year go, and its hard to remember all details.
I believe it was P700m controllers, and that I did a 2 step upgrade of the I/O modules.

Re: Unable to update firmware on MDS600

Weird. According to HP Support the only way was through direct attach.

Current setup is:

3G SAS: 1.18 FW
MDS600: 1.26 FW

Attempted booting a blade w/P700M on FW 9.20b-iso (relevant updates injected into swpackages), but the scexe's will not detect MDS600.

Not critical seen as I will receive the P212 tomorrow and probably resolve the issue that way, but much appreciated if you have the time to completely outline the process of doing this through blades. If nothing else it would be fun to report this back to HP Support. :)

Re: Unable to update firmware on MDS600

I followed this advisory, strictly:

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&taskId=110&prodSeriesId=3239462&prodTypeId=329290&objectID=c01909417

Cut and paste from the other thread:
To save you some sweat.

This is not an exact how to. You will need to read the abaove links.

Read it before you read this.

I did this in dec 09/jan 10.
Using FW CD 8.60.

Download FW CD 8.60
Create FW CD on an USB memory stick.

Download 2.54 FW for the MDS (See Link)
Copy fw fw1244.scexe into the \compaq\swpackages folder.

Download Switch FW 1.1.8.xx

Depending on you configuration
Chhose how to do it.

If you got a C7000 and a SAS switch in IC Bay 3 and 4.
Remove the switch in bay 3.
Connect all cables to the swictch in bay 4.
Downgrade the switch to 1.1.8.x

Boot a blade with a Smart Array ctrl (Not the onboard)on the USb mem.
Enter debug mode - At the first screen hold down the CTRL key, and enter D B X
waite a few seconds and you get a Linux command prompt.

Change to the swpacakes folder
\opt\bootdev\compaq\swpackages
Enter the following command
sh FWfile.scexe
Then follow screen
Once the MDS has been upgraded to 2.54.
You can upgrade the SAS switch again.
Remove the switch.
Put switch 3 back
put switch 4 back
connect all cables correctly.

Usinge the SAS switch manager.
Upgrade MDS to 2.66
Upgrade SAS switches to latest.

Don't try to be a wiseguy, it might punish you.

I was hoping that had 'fixed' this by now.

Re: Unable to update firmware on MDS600

Gregersenj:

Yep, followed your post strictly, but the MDS just doesn't appear. Automatic/interactiv fw update detects nothing, and the debug route using relevant scexe yields "no devices updated". The reason for my request for process outlining was to ensure that everything had been done correctly.

Tried with a P212 in an ML server and direct attach to MDS - no dice (tried both FW 9.20 iso boot and FWUPD through installed OS).

So, slightly stumped here - it seems that no matter which connection method the MDS remains invisible.

Re: Unable to update firmware on MDS600

And you are sure, that you're not on 2.54 or newer?

Using the C-class SAS switch.
If you got a FW older than 2.54 on the MDS.
You must down grade the SAS switch to 1.something.
If the FW is 2.54 or older the SAS switch must be at 2.something or newer.
