VA7110 Hot Spare problem

Hi,

We have a VA7110 problem.
The armdsp output says:

WARNING: The host indicated that hot spare space reservation was desired, but the space left unallocated was insufficient to provide the reservation.

This happened after HP replaced the controller of the VA7110.

Before we had:

CAPACITY USAGE

Total Disk Enclosures:________________1

Redundancy Group:_____________________1
Total Disks:________________________15
Total Physical Size:________________500.679 GB
Allocated to Regular LUNs:__________356.632 GB
Allocated as Business Copies:_______0 bytes
Used as Active Hot Spare:___________66.75 GB
Used for Redundancy:________________77.296 GB
Unallocated (Available for LUNs):___0 bytes

Now we have:

CAPACITY USAGE

Total Disk Enclosures:________________1

Redundancy Group:_____________________1
Total Disks:________________________15
Total Physical Size:________________500.679 GB
Allocated to Regular LUNs:__________356.632 GB
Allocated as Business Copies:_______0 bytes
Used as Active Hot Spare:___________0 bytes
Used for Redundancy:________________144.046 GB
Unallocated (Available for LUNs):___0 bytes

The Hot Spare is set to:

Hot Spare:____________________________LargestTwoDisks

Is there a way to re-allocate the space Redundancy took from Active Hot Spare ??

Regards,

Erik Jan

Re: VA7110 Hot Spare problem

Hi,
and welcome to the forums !

Your allocation of space to redundnacy is fixed, as VA calculates it based on setup.

Re: VA7110 Hot Spare problem

The VA was setup with LargestTwoDisks as Hot Spare which was allocated 66.75 GB.
Allocated for Redundancy was 77.296 GB.

This worked for over a year.
Then problems with batteries and controllers started.

After HP replaced the controllers, the Active Hot Spare allocation became 0 GB and the Redundancy increased to 144.046 GB 66.75 + 77.296).

I do not know what HP did to end up in this situation.
Can it be that an armdiscover messed things up ?

Anyway, I still would like to know how to get the Hot Spare allocation back again.

Re: VA7110 Hot Spare problem

Solution (partly):

Changed Host Spare Mode to none.
Then changed Host Spare Mode to Largest Disk.

Now I have Hot Spare allocation again:

Used as Active Hot Spare:___________33.375 GB

No space for Largest Two Disks, but that is perhaps too much for a VA with 15 disks.

Re: VA7110 Hot Spare problem

Solution: toggle Hot Spare settings.
