The book doesn't explain how to interpret the nsShow output, it just says to use it see if the device is present in the Name Server. The rest of the process is supposed to be:
visible in name server?
yes: Is it a zoning issue
no: Node configuration issue?

zoning issue?
yes: Problem identified
no: Timeout or Name Server conflict - escalate

Node Config issue?
yes: Problem identified
no: Name Server conflict - escalate

I'm still studying, trying to work out how you're supposed to interpret this stuff. Keep me posted.

For the zoning question, you use the chgShow command. If the output statest that no configuration is in effect, zoning is not enabled. If zoning is enabled, there may be a zoning conflict which should be readily apparent from the output.

If the device is not in the name server, you can try to reinitialize by using the portDisable and portEnable commands. If the device doesn't register with the Name Server, they suggest you work with your device suppliers.

And that's basically all they have to offer. Hopefully there's something in there that will help you.

Mike,

First off, your VA appears to be set for FC/AL mode. Change it to Fabric Login mode. Both ports. You will probably have to use the VFP (serial port) to do this. It should have come with a serial cable for this purpose.

Next, don't connect both of the VA's controllers to the same switch without zoning them apart. (support issue) The simplest thing to do is use 2 switches, which has the added benefit of no single point of failure. If no other switch is available, you can make it work by creating two zones, each with a VA port and one port from each host.

If you have all HP-UX, then leave the host port mode alone. Otherwise, you need to set the host port mode on a per-lun basis.

Next is LUN security. Use CommandView to set which hosts have access to which LUNs.

All the details are in the books. Post more if you have troubles.

Thanks Pete and Vincent. My problem isn't solved but I am digging more into the manuals and Google searches. A "storage specialist" is scheduled to come out here next week but I wanted to get as much configured on my own and have enough information to formulate questions for him. I did unplug the other controller from the switch and then I connected the serial cable and changed the switch "direct fabric attach topology" per the instruction manual. Still when I do an armdiscover I get nothing.

I apologize for not being a big "point" giver in the past. I have received help from here and the support has been fantastic. I will clean up my point awards as appropriate. There are several questions I have posted where none of the responses have helped but I will still give partial points.

Your last post said you changed the switch to Direct Fabric Attach... I was referring to changing the VA to Fabric mode via the serial port on the back of the VA

I just want to make sure you understand what I meant.

I connected a lap top to the VA7400 controller and I did a:

mgr -t 4 -c 1

I have tried that and the default (private loop_ setting:

mgr -t 2 -c 1

Is that what you meant?

Hmm... Let's see... switch in fabric mode... VA in fabric mode... no zoning on the switches...

Did you check nsshow to be sure that the VA is now N-port?

Are both the host and VA connected to the same switch? (ie: no real fabric of multiple switches, which should make this easier to figure out)

Does "ioscan -fnC disk" show the VA on the host? Did you remember to "insf -e"?

If you cannot see the VA in the ioscan output and don't get /dev/ files for it, then check LUN Security to make sure no security is set. If you set Security, check that the WWN's you gave for the host are correct.

So as you can see in the last entry above, the brocade sees the A6189A.

No Zoning is configured.

I only have one switch so yes they are all hooked into it.

That doesn't look right to me but I am not experienced enough to know what to look for.

I will have to read up on LUN Security. Perhaps our hp tech did that.

I am just picking up where he left off with the brocade.
