VA7400 with different sizes of disks

Hello,

we run a VA7400 with 36 GB disks in 2 RGs with RAID 0+1. Is it possible to put larger disks (72 GB) in the VA and what do we have to keep an eye on ?

Kind regards, Hinrich

Re: VA7400 with different sizes of disks

Hinrich,
even in RAID 0/1 VA manages data allocation. I've heard somewhere that in this mode you should add at least 2 larger disks. And indeed: if you will add one 72GB disk, where will upper extents be mirrored with (although this space should be used for read cache)? So to have mirror pair, add at least 2 72GB disks. Try studying VA virtualization principles available at http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/DocumentIndex.jsp?contentType=SupportManual&docIndexId=3124&locale=en_US&prodSeriesId=64100&prodTypeId=12169

Re: VA7400 with different sizes of disks

Hello Eugeny,

what is the impact on the hot spare disk behaviour ? Is the larger disk taken as hot spare (we have less than 15 disks in a RG) and a smaller disk is released from its hot spare status ?

Kind regards, Hinrich

Re: VA7400 with different sizes of disks

There's no dedicated hotspare disk in VA arrays. 'Active hotspare' is spread across all disks installed. It would be better if you'll read VA user's and service manual available at http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/DocumentIndex.jsp?contentType=SupportManual&docIndexId=3124&locale=en_US&prodTypeId=12169&prodSeriesId=64100
