VA7410 Capacity Usage

Hi Guys,

I'm new to the VA74xx systems and I'm trying to study one of our configurations here:

We have a va7410 + 2 x DS2405's which is made up of 40 x 36.4GB HDDs. The array is connected to a single host.

Now, when I do a armdsp to check the Capacity Usage, i get:

Sorry, but this output confuses me, because, if I do a manual capacity count, i.e. 20 x 36.4GB = ~768GB on an AutoRAID (I guess) would be ~368GB, which is what's been allocated to the server. So for the above output, i don't get the "Unallocated (Available for LUNs):" line which tells me that I still have several hundreds of space left for use?

Can someone explain this bit to me please? Also, how do I check what type of RAID was used in creating the LUNs here?

This is wrong.


You have two redundancy groups, that is two RAID groups of type autoraid. One group has 20 disks in it and the other 19 disks.

You also have one unused disk. (note unused does not mean hot spare).

In your example

You have 20 disks, each disk is 33GB (that's the nominal size for a 36GB disks) so the total physical space is 667GB (as noted in the armdsp output.

Two disks are used as a hot spares. That leaves 601GB physical size.

Autoraid uses a combination of RAID5 and RAID1 for redundance. So out of the 601GB (18 disks) of physical space, 122GB (the equivalent of 4 disks) are used as parity. Again Autoraid is using a combination of RAID5 and RAID1 and does not use PHYSICAL disks for parity.

So the RAIDed/protected/usable space in the redundancy group 1 is 479GB!

Yes! You have 479GB of usable space in the firat redundancy group. You are only using 110GB allocated to the server so that leaves you with 369 (or 368.38) GB available.

Similarly for redundancy group 2, you have 214 available space.

So the total unallocated space in the array is 585GB!.

The VAs have only two RAID types. RAID0/1 and AUTORAID. Based on the numbers it is set to autoraid. Like I said autoraid uses combination of raid1 nad raid5 and it has a mind of its own. Your have no control over it.

So your LUNs are of type autoraid. You can get a detailed listing using "armdsp -a arrayS/N" and post the output.

If you look towards thge bottom of your posting,

It is set to AutoRAID. This is a global setting for the entire VA7410. The only other option is RAID10.

You have a lot of unused space on this array. Based on your number oand sizes of your LUNs you would be just as fine with many fewer disks.

The RAID1/0 setting gives you better performance than autoraid.
