Vdisk Size Good to have few or more

Hello

Need to Create 3 File sys (with raid5)
one for 100GB
2nd for 400GB
3rd for 400gB

Q
1) Is it good to create 1 Vdisk 900GB, create vg and then 3 File sys

OR

Create 3 vdisks for each.

which one is preferred and why

Re: Vdisk Size Good to have few or more

Hi,
I'd suggest to create 3 VDISKS. You get better performance, because of 3 separate IO channels. Even 400GB is rather big disk and I'd suggest to make sw stripeset. But it depends on type of storage, on XP it's more meaningful than on EVA, and on application. If it's an archive, then single 400GB VDISK is suitable.

You should create 3 VRAID devices.
You should also create 3 VG with each one filesystem in it.
It is easier to handle in the future if you should add extra disk space

You also have to consider using some for of Continous Access for DR. Smaller vdisks and more of them are better. 3 VDisks would be the best choice. Even if you do not need to replicate the data. Replication is more efficeint using smaller VDisks.

You should also consider backup/restore time.

If you loose one vdisk with all data, you need to restore all 900 GB. So create a vdisk for every data type to be stored, so backups and restore can be managed in a more efficient way.
