What is AUTORAID in VA doing?

spec: VA7400 using AUTORAID with 71 disks with HP19 and using SDM 1.0.7

Hi,

I got two questions about AUTORAID using in Virtual Array.

1. Using armdsp I see a change in the Total Physical Size of one of a RedundancyGroup has been grown in last 2 months.
Is this because the array is using more RADI 5 DP in stead of RAID 1+0 because of lack of storge and therefore more storage space has become available??

CAPACITY USAGE (2 months ago)

Total Disk Enclosures:________________5

Redundancy Group:_____________________1
Total Disks:________________________36
Total Physical Size:________________717.639 GB
Allocated to Regular LUNs:__________248 GB
Allocated as Business Copies:_______100 GB
Used as Active Hot Spare:___________66.75 GB
Used for Redundancy:________________117.421 GB
Unallocated (Available for LUNs):___185.468 GB

Redundancy Group:_____________________2

2. using armperf -c ARRAY -m "RAID 1+0 Allocation,RAID 5 DP Allocation" VA7400, I expected to see the numbers of logical blocks in RAID1+0 and RAID5DP. But armperf put the results in GB and in a very small number. See below.

Is this a precentage of a numbers of logical blocks in total? or is it numbers of logical blocks in Giga so that i need to multipli 0.015 x 1073741824 (1G) = 16106127.36 => numbers of logical blocks in entire ARRAY?
But that doesn't make sence. If i run armperf to a specific LUN, I will get a bigger number than the one from entire Array.
All I want to know is, how much of the disks are in RAID1+0 and in RAID5DP. How can I see it?
PS: I attached an outout of armdsp in txt

Thanks in advance

William

Re: What is AUTORAID in VA doing?

William,

1. look at the armdsp. you have added a disk in RG2.

2. cannot help with armperf.

Re: What is AUTORAID in VA doing?

I've no idea how and when was a disk added? need to find it out myself later.

But question remains is
If an ARRYA in AUTORAID is changing config from RAID0+1 to RAID 5DP and visa vesa, will it affect the total unallocated storage shown by armdsp??

Re: What is AUTORAID in VA doing?

I've never seen the numbers change as far as available disk is concerned.

I assume the va (when running in autoraid) calculates the available sizes based on its rules for raid 0+1 vs raid 5 (I think its something like 10% or 20% raid 0+1). i.e. what the maximum space available using the lowest amount of raid 0+1 allowed.

Then it keeps as much in raid 0+1 as it can until it needs the space.

Re: What is AUTORAID in VA doing?

William,

The Unallocated space on RG1 has decreased from 185GB to 145GB because someone has created a 40GB LUN (if you you look at your allocated space for LUNS this has increased from 248GB to 288GB). I don't think this has anything to do with AUTORAID.

Simon
