What's going on our VA7410?

Hello All;

There are 16 sets of VA7410 on our systems.
(HPUX11.0 on N4000 Server with 2 sets of VA) as in one system.

We started to use the systems since May in last year. Then aleady 12 batterys have been replaced with the battery FAILED.
Especially, 8 batterys have been replaced
in this month.

The reason of the battery FAILED are shown in the arry-log,which used the command "armlog".
1. "Battery is end of life (EOL)"
2. Remainig of capacity is 0%

Both of them,that batterys could not be rechaged.

I don't know ,what's going on our VA?

Are they DEFECTIVE on the product? or any othe problem on our VA?

Regards;

Katsu

Re: What's going on our VA7410?

Hi Katsu,

The batteries in VA have a counter and hence will give this message. Usually replacing the battery is a good idea.

There are occassions when the HP support can help you to re-initialise the counters on the battery. Check with your HP support for that. In such case, battery replcement is not required.

Re: What's going on our VA7410?

Hi Mohan

Thank you for replying.

Yes, I think you are right!
Coz, I checked the battery infomation with "armdsp". The "Manufacturer Date" of the batterys whitch were replaeced.
They have manufacutred between March and May in 2003.

It's also shown the " Manufacturer Name" amd
"Device Name". Which is "SHEnerTech LI204SX",
and the controller revision is "A130".

So, does the battery have age limit,which is about 3 years?
And does the producut have any problem? Coz, other types of batterys are OK sofar.

Regards;

Katsu

Re: What's going on our VA7410?

Hi Katsu,

I think the batteries do have pre-set life time. Check the below comments from user guide,
---------------------------------------------
Battery Life. Many factors affect battery life, including length of storage time,
length of operating time, storage temperature, and operating temperature. A
battery should be replaced if the BATTERY LEDs or the software indicate a
battery has diminished storage capacity.
---------------------------------------------

I remember a firmware for the batteries along with the A130 array firmware. Did you update that? Updating that may help.

If you are asking if this battery state is a problem, the answer is "yes". You need to ensure that the array is in ready state always. With this battery issue the array might be in "warning" state.

If you can replace the battery it will be good. Or as I indicated earlier, if you can take the help of your hp CE, you may re-initialise the battery.

All the best.

With regards,
Mohan.

Re: What's going on our VA7410?

Thanks Mohan;

I am sorry about my poor English, but I'd like to ask about the arrya firmware.

As you said "I remember a firmware for the batteries along with the A130 array firmware. Did you update that? Updating that may help." on tha previous thread.

Which mean we better to update that firmware is greater than A130 ?
Or at least A130?

Our firmware on controller is A130 currently.

Re: What's going on our VA7410?

Hi Katsu,

The Array firmware A130 is one version below the latest , you need not change that. What I was mentioning is the battery firmware. You can update this battery firmware seperately.

The battery firmware file is seperate. You may get this battery firmware from your HP contact.

Mohan.

Re: What's going on our VA7410?

Hi Mohan;

Thank you for good infomation.
I'm sorry I have one more question about this.

I've made sure that which version of battery firmware is used our VA.

But, I couldn't find that.
Is it only HP CE would be able to make sure that version?

Or I've found " Battery Charger Firmware Revision:____5.0" which is shown detail of controller.

I'm very sorry that I ask you a troublesome question.

Re: What's going on our VA7410?

Katsu39,

I'm almost sure that this is an error caused by a firmware bug. Changing batteries will not help. Ask HP Support to check their Service Notes database for this symtom. They will probably have to dispatch a customer engineer to your site to assist with a firmware upgrade.
