the most secure method is to destroy the disks physically. There are smart people at government agencies that appear to be able to recover data from disks that had clearing techniques applied to them. If you are under strict security requirements (such as Sarbanes-Oxley), then destroying the disks is the way to go.

agree with jozef here, we get ours destroyed by HP, make sure that whoever does it is able to certify destruction.

There is no certified EVA based method to erase data. Initializing the EVA will delete all mapping information. It will be almost impossible to reconstruct data contents since the blocks on the individual disk only contain small parts of LUNs.

The only way will be overwriting the LUNs several times with different patterns using a certified software!If you are going to go host based, there is a FREE windows utility called ERASURE,

that includes the DoD 5220-22.M method
once production is complete, just take a spare server or two and mount all the volumes you need to wipe.
