That is not entirely true. With the AutoRaid, when you create a LUN the unit itself can potentially spread that amount over ALL disks in the unit. You have absolutely no control over what disks belong to what LUNs. So potentially any disk could be be a part of ALL LUNs on the unit.

Once the disk is inserted into the AutoRaid, you must stop thinking of it as an individual disk. Think of it instead as just additional storage capacity. That storage can potentially be used for anything the AutoRaid sees fit to use it for.

yep thats what I thought Patrick, thanks for confirming that for me. I expect this is an impossible question but can I tell how much usable space I can expect from the 18gb disk I am adding?

That' s true of course; I was thinking of Scott's jobs to extend the 12H.

As far as I know there is no way to extend a LUN (please correct me if I'm wrong) so his only option is to create a new LUN which will use this disk (among with the free space on other disks if available).

The only thing I can think of is to do is to check the array stats before you add the disk and then again after and see what changes.

Are there currently 18GB drives in the array?

It's not possible to know without knowing your present configuration. It could range from 0 (even less than 0 if you are replacing a larger drive with a smaller) to nearly 18GB.

Do this:
arraydsp -i
to get the array_id
then arraydsp -a array_id and post those results.

It will then be possible to tell you how much additional capacity, you can expect.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

I assume that you are going to replace A5 (9GB) with an 18GB unit. Because this is the 4th (actually, anything above the 2nd) 18GB unit, you will gain almost 9GB capacity. NOTE: You will gain even more (an additional 18GB) if you set "Active Hot Spare" to OFF. This will cost you the ability to automatically rebuild after a failed drive and some performance because less space is reserved for RAID 1/0 but capacity may be paramount in your case.

NOTE: You are now at 7 LUN's; only 1 more can be created so if you want to use all the capacity of this new disk, you need to asign all the space to the newly created LUN.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.
