missing EAB cables for eva8000 EMU - what to do?

I have an eva8000 array. I just went from 4 enclosures to 6. I only have two EAB cables apparently and 6 enclosures. The original 4 enclosures are numbered properly on the EMU even though only two have EAB cables.

The issue is the two new enclosures dont have EMU cables. They appear to be normal ethernet/cat6 cables, however there appears to be something different.

So, what should I do?

- Is there somewhere I can order more?
- Can I use another cable instaed?
- Is there a way I can get all the ID's set with only 2 cables and have all managed by the EMU?

The core issue is CVE lists the two new enclosures as unmapped hardware.

Hi,
the cable kits are the separate part numbers from the loop switches kits - AD553A and the
disk enclosures kits - AD542A (or B).
You might have gotten the following
345580-B21 Cable Kit to each new enclosure, check with your local HP, why the EAB cables were not included if you dont have them

Re: missing EAB cables for eva8000 EMU - what to do?

Some additional details:
The EMU cables/terminators should have the following part numbers:

Can Bus (EMU ID buss on rear right side of cabinet.)
Y cable - 17-05118-11,
top term. 12-56288=8-13;
Bottom Term. 12-56288-12;
port ID Can Cable 17-05403-01
- interlink cables 17-05405-01

Hmmm, internally I can only find part #345580-B21.

What does the above part number include?

Hi,
I have listed all connection components from the cables to the terminators to have all parts available for you to communicate it with your local HP to agree on the needed part.

Re: missing EAB cables for eva8000 EMU - what to do?

Heh, I wish it was that easy. We are on our own and internal, so we dont have someone to "work with" on it.

I was just curious what comes in the part number listed...

It appears all I need is the EAB cables from the EMU port to the chain.

Re: missing EAB cables for eva8000 EMU - what to do?

yes,
and the theory to it is the following:
if the EMU displays 00, which is your case,
it indicates, that the drive enclosure is not connected to the address bus. After the connecting it to the address bus verify that the EMU displays a unique enclosure number. Also verify, that the other EMUs continue to display valid enclosure numbers. Then wait 15 minutes. Verify via the Command view EVA that the enclosure is no longer in the Unmappable hardware folder. Also verify that the new enclosures have good status as well as their disk drives and thats it

Re: missing EAB cables for eva8000 EMU - what to do?

Can I move around the two cables I have, let the enclosure EMU get a unique ID, then remove it and move to the next enclosure? This way its resolved before I even order more cables?

Re: missing EAB cables for eva8000 EMU - what to do?

No,
this does not work, you need to have all cables in place to have the whole work done.
Plugging/unplugging makes no sense, the enclosure will repeatedly return to its 00 numbering after the cable unplug.
But as you see, the EVA operation is not affected with this and it is purely management stuff which has to be finished/repaired.

Re: missing EAB cables for eva8000 EMU - what to do?

Hi,

According to Partsurfer 345580-B21 contains:

Cable Kit : Expansion cabinet drive shelf cable kit - Includes four 2Gbps short wave Small Form Factor (SFP) transceiver modules with LC connectors, two 5m (6.6ft) fiber optic cables with LC connectors, and two cable spools with mounting hardware

So it doesn't look like the EAB cables are in that kit.

Cheers,

Re: missing EAB cables for eva8000 EMU - what to do?

A bit theory to explain the listed part numbers once more :-):
the CAN (controller area network) bus is terminated with the top/bottom terminators:
(top term. 12-56288=8-13; Bottom Term
12-56288-12), which you allready have and consists of the following:
a)CAN bus (2 wires) - cabinet specific data
b)the address bus (7 wires) - enclosure numbers
c)a ground wire (1 wire) -

The Enclosure address bus (EAB), sometimes called also the cabinet bus (CAB) consists of cables and either the rack screwed junction boxes (JB), or velco strapped shelf ID expansion cables. 2 drive enclosures connect with keyed 10-pin connectors to each JB or shelf ID expansion cable.

Lets assume that you have the ID expansion cable variant:
Then the
a) Y-cable is used only for the controller pair connection (Y cable - 17-05118-11)
b) the interlink cables 17-05405-01 are JB2JB cables
c) and finaly :-)
port ID Can Cable 17-05403-01 should be the PN for the enclosure cable for the CAN/EAB connection

Re: missing EAB cables for eva8000 EMU - what to do?

Unfortunately those part numbers do me no good for our ordering process.

What is a kit or part number that I can order that gives me a set of EMU cables, etc, etc for the EMU system?

Re: missing EAB cables for eva8000 EMU - what to do?

Yes, it appears I have a ton of the ends with multiple female ports. My controllers have the Y cable also. And the original 2 enclosures that came with the EVA8000 (before loop backs) have the cat6/LAN like cable from the EMU port to the chain.

I now need the 4 new enclosures to be able to connect to the cable chains...

So, any kit (even with extra parts for spares) I can order that gives me everything needed?

Ok, I can order:

D542B
345580-B21

What all do these kits include?

Ugh, I wish you could edit/delete posts..

I see the post about what the long part # contains. Now I can see and order the smaller part number listed above (ending with the B, not the A) so, what does this part # include?

Re: missing EAB cables for eva8000 EMU - what to do?

Hi,
345580-B21 is cable kit, expansion cab drive shelf

336881-B21 is EAB bus expansion cable kit

Re: missing EAB cables for eva8000 EMU - what to do?

Sweet! Ok, so the first part number seems unnecessary.

The second part #,
336881-B21 is EAB bus expansion cable kit

Seems like its just the cable that runs from the EMU card to the chain? This is all I am needing...

Is it just one cable? Do I need a kit per enclosure?

Re: missing EAB cables for eva8000 EMU - what to do?

It looks like the part number you provided is a fibre-channel cable...?

I need the cat6/ethernet/LAN looking cable that goes from the EMU management port to the chain. I need four of them so all new enclosures have the cable running to the chain.

Ok, so you are saying part # 336881-B21 is not fibre-channel? Its the cat6/ethernet cable that I need?

Re: missing EAB cables for eva8000 EMU - what to do?

according to the part surfer the content of the:
336881-B21 Cable Kit : Expansion cabinet cable kit - Includes an enclosure address bus (EAB) extension cable, a top terminator, and three shelf ID expander cables

345580-B21 Cable Kit : Expansion cabinet drive shelf cable kit - Includes four 2Gbps short wave Small Form Factor (SFP) transceiver modules with LC connectors, two 5m (6.6ft) fiber optic cables with LC connectors, and two cable spools with mounting hardware

so the 336881-b21 seems to be the right choice, but check it pls with your local HP HW support team (share this info) and also this .pdf (page 40)
http://www.storage-expo.com/ExhibitorLibrary/39/HP_StorageWorks_Enterprise_Virtual_Array_Family_6.pdf

to confirm that you need 336881-B21 Cable Kit pls

Re: missing EAB cables for eva8000 EMU - what to do?

Hi,

That kit will probably get you more than you actually need...

If you do just need the junction box to disk enclosure cables, then this company can supply them:

http://www.swancomp.co.uk

I bought loads of EVA parts from them about a year ago, including some of the cables you need. Their online stock list currently has 11 of the 17-05403-01 part number listed.

Cheers,

Rob
