"write cache enabled" in win2k3 device manager and smartarray 6400

i notice that "write cache enabled" option is disabled in the win2k3 device manager. In ACU i've set write back cache to 50% on my 6400 controller. I've 256+64 MB memory on the controller. Should i also set the option in windows device manager ?

Stefano,

if you are looking in device manager at the "Disk Drives" properties, then don't worry, your controller is working with the settings seen in the ACU. The controller F/W and driver do not allow the OS to change the Cache policy, you need to use the ACU for that.

If you do try to enable it, the System eventlog will get a warning entry on the DISK resource that the driver disabled the cache again.

i.e.

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: Disk
Event Category: None
Event ID: 34
Date: 9/26/2005
Time: 8:23:00 AM
User: N/A
Computer: ML370G3
Description: The driver disabled the write cache on device \Device\Harddisk2\DR2.

HTH
