removing drive in array with active hot spare

I have a RAID 5 with a failed drive [4 drives total including spare]. The drive on slot 2, is having read errors and needs replaced. From the ACU, the spare shows as active. However, the only light showing on the front of the drive is the activity light. The LED indicating drive online status is OFF. Is it safe to remove the drive in slot 2 and place in a new?

Re: removing drive in array with active hot spare

You should tell what kind of "device" (array model or server internal) you have ...

Hope this helps!

Sorry for that. The server is a Proliant ML350 G3 with a 532 Smart Array controller.

Re: removing drive in array with active hot spare

If the disk is failed in ACU and the array is rebuild on the spare, you should remove and replace the disk drive.

Hope this helps!

should there be an indication that the raid is rebuilt on the spare? i do not see that the online led is on.

Re: removing drive in array with active hot spare

If only one drive has failed and the volume/s can be accessed then it's either rebuilt or is running on parity, so long as the failed drive is clearly identified then replace it anyway. If the spare has not kicked in then it should rebuild to the replaced drive.

Re: removing drive in array with active hot spare

I'm sorry to belabor the point, but as long as the ACU indicates the spare is in use, I should be ok to remove the offending drive? I ask, because in the tech guide for this controller, there is no description for the LED status as on the spare here: flashing, off, off (see attachment). I hope you can understand my hesitation in this, and wanting to get all my ducks in a row, so to speak.
