to relocate two disk enclosures - EVA5000.
Hi.
I need to relocate two disk enclosures(and disks too) from EVA5000 to other EVA5000 system without the power interruption.
Check me please. I must do next steps:
1.To ungroup the disks in the both enclosures.
2. To delete the group(only these disks are located in this group).
2.To power off both disk enclosures.
3.To disconnect FC cables from the disks enclosures and FC loop switches.
4.To disconnect managment cables from the disk enclosures.
5. To remove disks and then enclosures from racks.
Is it right a procedure? I don't miss some steps?
And the enclosure installation procedure:
1. To install both disk enclosures in other EVA system(mounting in racks)
2. To connect all cables to both disk enclosures(FC and management cables)
3. To install disks in the disk enclosures.
4. To power on both enclosures.
5. To refresh devices in Command View.
6. To configure disks.
Is it right the procedure?
Thank You very much!

Re: to relocate two disk enclosures - EVA5000.
Looks fine to me except:
- I would remove the disk drives before power down - check the [Remove] button, which is available for an ungrouped disk drive
- I would remove the power supplies from the disk drive enclosures before taking them out of the cabinet - they add some value to the total weight

Re: to relocate two disk enclosures - EVA5000.
Hi All,
I'm new to EVA's only had one for 6 months,
Here's my penny's worth
but surely if all you disks are in the same disk group on the same shelves, you have a single point of failure ?? Best practice says to stripe the disks vertically amongst the shelves so you have a robust RSS.
Secondly if you've only got a couple of disks in each then its practical to do what you propose, though not necessarily sensible.. Why not buy 2 new shelves, they don't cost that much.
Best of Luck

Re: to relocate two disk enclosures - EVA5000.
This what I would do...
Removal procedure:
0. Delete any virtual drives.
1. Ungroup the disks in the both enclosures.
2. Delete the group(only these disks are located in this group).
3. Drill down to each disk drive and click on Remove, then physically remove each drive.
4. Power off both disk enclosures.
5. Disconnect FC cables from the disks enclosures and FC loop switches.
5. Disconnect enclosure ID cables from both disk enclosures.
6. Remove disk enclosures from racks.
Enclosure installation procedure:
1. Install both disk enclosures in other EVA system(mounting in racks)
2. Connect all cables to both disk enclosures(FC and enclosure ID cables)
3. Install only one disk in slot 1 of each disk enclosure.
4. Power on only one enclosure.
5. At back, verify enclosure has picked a proper enclosure ID number.
6. From Command View, verify the new enclosure appears in hardware, also, verify the new disk drive appears in the "Ungrouped" group of disks.
7. Power on the other enclosure.
8. At back, verify enclosure has picked a proper enclosure ID number.
9. From Command View, verify the new enclosure appears in hardware, also, verify the new disk drive appears in the "Ungrouped" group of disks, you now have two disks in "Ungrouped".
5. Add disks one at a time alternating between enclosures, ie: slot 2, slot 2, slot 3, slot 3.
6. IMPORTANT: WAIT at least one minute between adding new disks. The disk must do POST, the EVA must discover it, then give it a disk number, then add it to the "Ungrouped" group.
7. The new RSS configuration will not be ideal/robust. If you create the new disk group including all the drives in both shelves, and then only create VRAID1 mirrored drives, each mirror memeber will be on a different shelf, therefore, you will be able to tolerate a complete shelf failure with no data loss.
8. From command view, verify status of new virtual drives.
Regards,
TC
