while disk failure DS2300 / 4si RAID card

Hi

I have an RP5470 connected to a DS2300 via a 4si RAID card. After a reboot all disk ( 7 disks ) in the irm shows as in fail state. irdiag -v shows the same. disks are connected to the channel 2 of the RAID card. 7 disks are in RAID 5. server is running 11iv1.
checked cable connection from RAID card to the DS2300 and was perfect.
any help mostly appriciated

I would suspect the 2300 or the RAID card.
Have you tried, once the system has started, removing the drives one at a time, waiting a minute and then reinserting to see if the controller trys to recognize the new drive?

Also, When you are in IRM, you can "Force" the disks back online. The problem with this is that you are gambling that all disks went to failed at the same time. If you force a disk back online that failed sometime before the rest, data corruption is very likely to occur. The fact that your irdiag -v shows the disk's capacity for all 7 disks suggests the 4si can actually see all 7 disks at the moment. You would expect to see certain disks as "Not Responding". If you go into irm into Management menu > objects > physical drive. Going into that drive gives you options such as , properties, rebuild, make online, etc...

To see whch disk went offline first, you can look in /var/adm/syslog/syslog.log or OLDsyslog.log if its been rebooted. This gives a running commentary of which disk failed first.


(What you have to watch out for is one disk failing, going to rebuild to the hotspare, then that disk failing, then all the disks failing. You dont want to force a disk back online that was only halfway through a rebuild as the data could be rubbish on the hotspare (unless it says rebuild completed). If there was a hotspare configured you would expect to see one of your disks at a ready state, which there isnt, so no hotspare on this occasion)

If you still have the syslog files of when the logical drive failed you can add a little more certainty to getting your data back. As the 4si is a netraid product, there is a log in windows seperate to event log, maybe someone can shed light to whether the 4si logs are written anywhere else apart from to the syslog files in HPUX?

If you get the order they failed, you reverse the order forcing them back online. Last one to fail is put back online first. Then the first one to fail is set to rebuild.

I have a similar issue with an RP2470 and a 4SI controller:

for some reason (probably the 4SI SCSI cables were disconnected and reconnected to the wrong ports at one stage)
the disks were all flagged as FAILED with the logical drive OFFLINE, upon making them ON_LINE the logical drive status changed to degraded (actually one disk was found failed within the RAID5 logical drive)

The server was rebooted but still no disk device was detected (only the controller device)

I wonder why a degraded logical drive is not seen by the system.
