VLS1002i---Redhat Linux5

Hi,

I attached directly HP VLS1002i to a Redhat Linux server. But i always get a error" soft error count since last status0, General status bit on (41010000),BOT ONLINE IM_REP_EN" while i try to "tar" on tape drive.
I found the description which mentions VLS should be attached to a Windows2003 server.

Can VLS1002i be attached directly to a Linux server?? If so, what can i do to deal with the failed tar?
