1 bad drive brought 12 disk RAID 1+0 MSA60 down

I went to install a new MSA 60 at a clients site.
The server was on the bench for a week with out a problem.
We were just about ready to move their exchange 2003 system to the new ML350 and MSA60 when i noticed a amber light on one drive.

Since i would be calling HP Tech support, i knew the steps they would want to to try.
So, i took the drive out and placed it back in to make sure it was secure in the case.
The rebuild was slow and got to about 23% and the Smart Array p800 disappeared from the ACU
(and the windows drive letter) MSA was locked.

We did this a few times to test, every time the same result.

I could have got HP to come out that night due to the care pack we have, but decided not to till i test some more at my office.

The HP tech came to my office Sunday morning and had a new drive and I/O board.
I wanted him to see what it did with the bad drive. Sure enough, it did the same thing. (even with a new I/O card) (also note, the problem did follow the drive in different bays)
But, he did not have an answer for me as to why it blew away the controller.

The new drive was rebuilt fine.

But, i still do not understand how one drive caused a big problem. Granted, anything can happen but you get a box like this to prevent a shut down of your data.

What my concern is that something is wrong with the box, card, or drives.

Note: All firmware is up to date.

Very unusual. This is definitely not the norm. I would be interested in getting my hands on this drive and doing root cause analysis. I suspect our HP Tech has already sent it in for exchange.

When you stated, I/O card what exactly was replaced.

Thanks for the reply...
They called it the I/O board on the phone and on site. That is what i went with :)
Really it is the interface where the scsi cable attaches to the MSA60. The whole thing slides out.

I still have the original MSA and 11 harddrives.

the Tech replaced one drive (so now i have 12 back in the device) and the "I/O card"

Do you work for HP?
I can get my case number... if that helps.
My concern is the rest of the devices ok (msa, drives, and controller.

I have to go back and install on Friday.
