1 drive at RAID 0 to 2 drives RAID 1

1 drive at RAID 0 to 2 drives RAID 1

I have 1 drive on an array controller - marked as array A, RAID 0. It's my C drive and hence OS drive too.

I want to put on another drive (same size 72gb) as RAID 1.

Can this be done, if so how? I don't want to have to re-install anything, just chuck the drive in - use some config tool and it create a mirror on the fly.

Re: 1 drive at RAID 0 to 2 drives RAID 1

Twiki,

this depends on the array controller. You can migrate from Raid 0 to 1+0 on most SmartArray controllers.

for instance on the P800, check here:
http://bizsupport.austin.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c00729544/c00729544.pdf

page 36

This is the "Configuring Arrays on HP Smart Array Controllers Reference Guide"

good luck !

Re: 1 drive at RAID 0 to 2 drives RAID 1

There are no options to migrate my array at the moment - probably due to the fact there is only 1 disk in the array.

All I can do is Extend my array - put the new disk into this array - but it doesnt tell me what this will do - extend using the existing RAID 0 - which obvioulsy I don't want for my OS C drive!

I'm guessing mirroring the OS drive will have to be done at re-boot at boot time before the OS lauches too?

The smart controller I have is the 641.

Re: 1 drive at RAID 0 to 2 drives RAID 1

You do not want to expand the array, you want to do RAID type migration (raid0 to raid 1). There is hinting that the 641 is capable of that in page 5-2, table 5-1.

Typically this would be done live, no need to reboot or do it offline.

The ACU guide says this would be under the Logical Drive menu. Look at page 14 and 25 of http://docs.hp.com/en/9320/acu.pdf

Re: 1 drive at RAID 0 to 2 drives RAID 1

hi

what is your server and which controller?

the procedure is called:

EXPAND - MIGRATE

you add you new HDD after inserting it in the server so you expand RAID yo add the HDD into your RAID 0 and after that MIGRATE option will be available to go for RAID 1

Didn't your momma teach you to say thanks!
