ACU won't detect drives in MSA30 enclosure

Hi folks,

My boss bought a new box and I hope you can help me out to configure an extra RAID5 array on a new MSA30 enclosure connected to a Proliant ML370 G3 server.

The w2k3 server has the newest BIOS and ACU version available but will only detect the existing internal slot 1 of the SA-642 which holds the existing arrays. It will not detect the external slot on which the MSA30 is connected.

Strange enough, Windows DiskManager is able to see the 3 unassigned drives though.

Any suggestions would be welcome. The package only included the Documentation CD which doesn't include the software installation.

MSA30 enclosure
U320 I/O SB module, EMU, 3x72 Gb U320 disks
Smart Array 642 Controller (2.34B version)
ML370 G3 Win2k3
BIOS P28 (9/15/2004)
ACU 7.30.9.0

Tnx in advance

From reading the specifications it looks like the ML370 G3 has an integrated SCSI interface and you have connected the MSA30 to this port.

If you check the disk's properties, do you see a model number like 'BD072...' or 'BF072...'?

Re: ACU won't detect drives in MSA30 enclosure

Uwe,

Thank for the pointer. Here is some more info.

I noticed another thing in the Device Manager
after connecting the MSA30 to the ML370 G3.

The Multifuntion Adapter
- HP iLO Management Channel Interface Driver

I updated this driver to version 1.5.2195.0 (10/29/2004)

Properties in the Windows DiskManager shows for the 3 drives:

COMPAQ BF07288576

Physical inspection confirms that model with firmware HPB2 and the date listed on the drive says 2005/3 Rev. A

Hard Disk
Product Name BF07288576 72.8 GB 15K RPM Wide Ultra320 SCSI
Interface: Ultra320 SCSI
Capacity: 72.8 GB

Thanks again

Re: ACU won't detect drives in MSA30 enclosure

So it looks like you have connected the MSA30 to a simple SCSI adapter, not a SmartArray controller.

Re: ACU won't detect drives in MSA30 enclosure

Uwe,

You were right. The MSA30 was connected on the wrong SCSI port. Tnx for showing me not to overlook the simple things.

I proposed my client to reorganize his cabinets there the the backside of the servers are hardly reachable without twisting your neck.

I am a happy camper and you deserved your points.

Cheers
