Adding more space to Proliant ML370G3 with RAID 5

Hi, we have RAID 5 with 5 36GB disk and need to increase drives capacity. What is the best way to do this? Should I just change every disk for a bigger one one by one... how should I proceed?

thanks in advance!

Re: Adding more space to Proliant ML370G3 with RAID 5

Hi,

You don't mention what RAID card you are using, but I'm assuming it's a SmartArray of some form...

Basically, yes you need to change the disks one at a time, and let the RAID-5 array rebuild before swapping the next one.

Once you've swapped all the drives, you will need to use the ACU (Array Configuration Utility) to expand the logical drives to use the new space.

You will also need to do something at the OS level once this has completed to be able to see the extra space, however you don't mention which OS you're using. Assuming Windows you may well need to look at the diskpart utility.

Hope this helps,

Thanks Rob!

The server has windows 2003. Once I finish the process, do I have to restore data from a backup or the data stays intact?

No. The data should stay intact.

It's always a good idea to ensure that you have a verified backup however, just in case...
