Array P420I with 4*300GB Disk + 1 300GB Disk Active Spare has defective disk
Hello,
I have a question about a P420I where 4*300GB disk 15K + 1 ActiveSpare 300GB 15 K is in use.
The system is set to Raid 5 and there is 1 active spare. There is only 1 Logical Drive.
Disk 4 of the array has with a yellow sign with meesage 'predictive failure'
My idea was that when a disk has a problem the Active Spare was automitcly reaplaced the drive with a issue.
Meanwhile the system has now on the disk with the Active Spare now a red sign with the message Failed.
How can i see that the active spare is used instead of the failed disk ?
The active spare disk had a sign with green and is see a little bit movement on the sign on the drive in the configuration utiltity
It has still the (Active Spare) message after it .
The server is already many years old and is on the list to replace within a few months. So if there is a solution to remove the Active Spare and put it physicly instead of the defective one and do a rebuild automaticly this would be also a option for the problem.
But now iw am not sure if the active spare is even active and dont understand the whole system from active spare if it is not used automaticly instead of the defective one.
Or do i have to do something myself from the Array Configuration utility to activate the active spare ? I dont see any option .
So i think that the active spare is there but not recplaced the defective disk , maybe i am wrong.
Thanks
Dca

Re: Array P420I with 4*300GB Disk + 1 300GB Disk Active Spare has defective disk
Hello @DCA_1,
Thanks for the perfect post with all the relevant details!
I think the current status of the 'Active spare' disk is due to cached information. If you have CLI connectivity to the array, can you please check the disk's current status from CLI?

Re: Array P420I with 4*300GB Disk + 1 300GB Disk Active Spare has defective disk
Hello,
Thanks for your reaction.
I am not aware of the correct commands so i have searched and tried a few commands. I have done a few CLI commands but maybe not the right one's.
I have done ctrl slot=0 ld 1 show / CTRL all show config / CTRL ALL SHOW STATUS / ctrl slot=0 pd all show status / ctrl slot=0 ld 1 show / ctrl slot=0 pd all show detail on all those commands i cannot see in the result if the Active spare is effective in use or still standby. I will put the results below , maybe the wrong CLI command... So below a lot of text results.
The only thing i can see in the results that is listed Active Spare : OK but with this OK i still dont know if the disk is now running as a spare in the array instead of a failed one or still standby with status OK ?
Thanks if anyone can give me a hint.
Thanks
Dca

Re: Array P420I with 4*300GB Disk + 1 300GB Disk Active Spare has defective disk
Hello @DCA_1,
That looks strange. I too don't have the exact CLI command to check that.
You can remove the alerts, restart GUI services and check again. If the issue still exists, anyway you have to replace the failed disk. Please replace it and check again.

Re: Array P420I with 4*300GB Disk + 1 300GB Disk Active Spare has defective disk
Hello,
Do you have another command that i can use to check in CLI ?
I have added specialy a active spare disk with the idea when a disk is failed it would be automatcily changed to the spare.
Since i have a active spare disk wich is marked as active spare and 1 disk that is already failed i am affraid to take out the activa spare to use instead of the bad disk what if it is in use without showing it ?
The server need to be replaced within a few months so i dont want to buy new disk if not needed and since there is a new disk in de spare (disk 5) .
I dont know what i do best . So if you can advise me another CLI command that i can enter. ?
Thanks
Dca
