Business copy on VA7410

Ques 1) is this similar to EMC's BCV's where it is true replication of data that can be split off and used for other applications. Is it actually a pointer based replication??

Ques 2) Can you split off volumes on the fly allowing applications to continue running during split thus syncing up transactions

Does that make sense

Re: Business copy on VA7410

Yes using VA Business copy (priced )you can take online copies while your application are running similar like BCV synch and Split.

But on VA there is no option to establish SRDF(remote copy of BCV ) .

thx,

Re: Business copy on VA7410

Ques2 first: Yes.

Ques1: I don't know about EMC's BCV's, but the VA bc's are using their own pointer based solution. If you bc your data, it is available immediately, your are reading the original bits, but your are writing *new* bits.

HTH!

Hope this helps!

Re: Business copy on VA7410

So the data on VA technology is actually cloned and can be split off to be used lets say for testing

Re: Business copy on VA7410

Hi,

We use BCV on three arrays and it is quite efficient. The application keeps on running on one node uneffected from the split or merge.

But care must be taken while splitting, both the volumes should be synced completely before split otherwise some of the splitted data will not be useful.

I am not aware about EMC'c BCV but it uses delta copy meaning that only the changes since last split are updated to split copy after merge. It is quite efficient for offline/online application backups without effecting live copies.
