Compatability issues

I have a SCSI Controller that does not have a model number on the board itself. It does have part #199633-001 inscribed on it. I looked in Compaq's site and all I can find is that it is a 32-bit Fast-Wide SCSI-2 controller / P Controller. The problem is, I am trying to install it on an older Gateway 2000 Pentium Pro 180 box, and am having problems installing NT Server 4.0. The install recognizes the Symbios chip and starts to load the driver, but then right before it scans the hard disks, it tells me it can't find any hard drives on the system. I have tried a different drive with the same results. Is this controller compatible with other motherboards other than Compaq?
