Connection names

I've setup a MSA1500G2 with HA, but used the same connection names for all FC HBA controllers (ESX_CONN_1). My ESX servers and MSA seem to work correctly for over 6 months now. But when I had to install a new MSA1500 I read that you have to use different connection names. Can this cause a problem? Can I rename the connections without any problem?
