Creation of RAID5 taking forever

I have proLiant server with no operating system, with 8 disks. I have booted the server using the "Smart Start CD" and created a RAID5 across the 8 300gb disks.
I did this yesterday, but the server wtill shows the message
"Background parity initialization is currently queued or in progress on logical drive 1 ( RAID 5 in array A)...

How do I know if it is queued or it is being created?

Re: Creation of RAID5 taking forever

Hello,

the initialization will start if IO is going down to the disks, e.g. when you install the OS. Without IO the initialization will not start.

Re: Creation of RAID5 taking forever

I apologise in advance for my lack of knowledge, but do I not need the RAID to be created before I can load the OS onto it? (I will be loading LINUX)

Thanks

Re: Creation of RAID5 taking forever

Hello Max,

you have already created the RAID and it's usable. You can install the OS and the controller will do the rest for you.

Some controllers will inititalize a RAID by writing zeros to it and calculating the parity informations. But AFAIK the Smart Array controllers don't do this.

Excellent. I suppose I can carry on with installing the OS. Thanks for your assurance.
