EMU cable and Enclosure ID in an EVA4000

We have a EVA4000 in our data center, and it has the 2C1D configuration.

We want to upgrade it to 2C2D, and due to rack space concerns, we can not mount the new enclosure in the same rack.

And teh EMU cable is not long enough to connect to the address bus from the other rack.

If I connect the EMU cables in the following arrangement, will it work ?

EMU cable from the 1st Enclosure : ID port 1
EMU cable from the 2nd Enclosure : ID port 10
EMU cable from the controllers : ID port 11

or

EMU cable from the 1st Enclosure : ID port 1
EMU cable from the 2nd Enclosure : ID port 10
EMU cable from the controllers : ID port 2

or, any other configuration?

Actually the best way is not to seperate EVA4K, but if this is the only solution then you can use an intercabinet cable for EMU as used in two rack 8K series EVA's.

The EMU bus has a special addressing logic.

I could not understand the cabling choises you gave above but if two disk enclosures and the controller enclosure gets unique ID's via EMU BUS then there will be no problem.

Can you please give the specifications of the inter-cabinet cable for EMU (part number etc.)?

What I meant was:

The standard cabling configuration is:
Enclosure 1 : ID port 1
Enclosure 2 : ID port 2
Controllers (Y-cable) : ID port 3

Can we go for another configuration such as:
Enclosure 1 : ID port 1
Enclosure 2 : ID port 10
Controllers (Y-cable) : ID port 11

or
Enclosure 1 : ID port 1
Enclosure 2 : ID port 10
Controllers (Y-cable) : ID port 3

Another question:
Does EVA4000 support more than 6 ID ports ? Is an extension of the EMU bus possible ?

Hi,

I think the part number you need for the cab expansion cable is 336881-B21.

What IDs are the enclosures and controllers on at the moment ?

Although HP expect the controllers and enclosures to be on specific IDs I don't think it actually matters. Everything should work, regardless of the IDs that get used...

Thanks for the help guys, I connected the new enclosure to the ID port 6, and it's working fine.

Is it advisable to make a cable using a 10 conductor cables and RJ45 sockets, and use it in place of the EMU cable ?

Hi,

I doubt that's a good idea...

The older style EMU components, as used on the EVA3/5000 had a junction box, so I suspect there's some electronics embedded within there somewhere.

Also note that they're not standard RJ45 connectors, if my memory's correct. They're RJ45-Z which are slightly different, to prevent normal CAT-5 being plugged in...

We are using a EVA4000 and there is no junction box in the cables.

And if we use the correct RJ45 sockets (the variant you mentioned), will it work ?

What are the things that can possibly go wrong if we try this ?

Without knowing the exact specification of the cables used, I wouldn't like to say for certain...

Which cable is it that you were looking to make up ? The one from the drive enclosure to the bus, or for the bus itself ?

I'd guess that the former would be easier to make up than the latter.
