EVA3000 to EVA4400: data migration license

Hello!

We want to migrate data from a EVA3000 to a EVA4400.

Till now CA was used for EVA3000(EVA1)->EVA3000(EVA2). We have a 1TB License at the EVA1, but there are more data than 1TB which need to be migrated.

My question is:
In the quickspecs of CA they say: ""Licensing for DR will be provided by a "data migration" license. This license enables DR for 60 days then expires.""

Do we need to purchase a data migration license for EVA3000->EVA4400?
And if not,do we need an additional license for migrating more than 1TB ?

Can anybody help ?

best regards
walter

Re: EVA3000 to EVA4400: data migration license

hum... sorry to tell that, but you can't replicate datas between eva 3000 and 4400... Continous Access won't help you...
The best (for me) is to create a logical mirror in your OS (i did it with AIX 5.3 and Wind 2003 servers) for each volume to migrate, with a lun on each eva. Once mirroring is ok, break the raid deleting eva 3000 disk from system and unpresenting it. Works fine and transparent for users.
Hope this helps.

Re: EVA3000 to EVA4400: data migration license

Hello Patrice!

But we want to replace the EVA3000 with EVA4400.And in the quickspecs they say that a "one-way" synchronous replication can be done

<< The following replication scenarios across EVA models are supported
EVA 3000/5000 <-> EVA 4100/6100/8100
EVA 4100/6100/8100 <-> EVA 4400
EVA 3000/5000 -> EVA 4400 (migrate only)*
*NOTE: *NOTE: *NOTE: *NOTE:
Unidirectional data migration from EVA 3000/5000 to EVA 4400 is supported using CA features
EVA 4400 to EVA 3000/5000 replication will NOT be supported
EVA3000/5000 firmware versions VCS 3.1xx & 4.1xx are required
Only Synchronous mode replication supported
Link is FC only ( the expectation is the customer will be replacing a EVA3000/5000 with an EVA
4400 within the data center
Fabric support will be as specified in the SAN Design Guide.
DR groups are created only to migrate the data from one array to the other. No support for long
term CA relationships from the EVA 3000/5000 to the EVA 4400 arrays greater than 60 days.
Licensing for DR will be provided by a "data migration" license. This license enables DR for 60
days then expires.
Fault tolerance (i.e. switch failures, ISL failures, etc) will be provided.>>

Re: EVA3000 to EVA4400: data migration license

ARGHHHH Walter...
we just paid"specialists" for it, and they told me that was unpossible to replicate for migration between eva 3000 an 4400, so i had to plan a long migration lun to lun...
i am not satisfied from them for a lot of things, but now, it's the summit...
i goes put to kill somenone and i comme back when i'm well #;)) arghhh....

> they told me that was unpossible

Well, _when_ did they tell it to you?

The CA QuickSpec, Version 22 - February 26, 2008 says:
""What's New
* Support for EVA4400*

*Limited to EVA4400 to EVA4400 synchronous replication""

Version 23 - June 16, 2008 says:
""What's New
- CA Enhancements in EVA4400
-- Support for replication between EVA4400 and EVA 4100/6100/8100 (v6.x)
-- One way Data migration support from EVA 3000/5000 to EVA 4400""

All these are moving targets and many rules change over time...

Re: EVA3000 to EVA4400: data migration license

of course Uwe, they told me the in june (begin), but we started operations in july.
The problem is that they didn't refresh their knowing about the subject. An "expert" should know everything about his domain te stay an expert. If the client (me) learn something the "expert" don't know, there's a problem...
It's not big problem, but a problem plus a problem plus a problem plus another problem, it makes a lot ...

Re: EVA3000 to EVA4400: data migration license

Hello Partice and Uwe!

I think I got the answer for the data migration license.

If installing CV 8.xx you get a unlimited CA-license (for 60 days). There must not exist an other DR-Group. The old ones, as in our case between two evas need to be deleted. Then a unidirectional replication between eva3[5]000 and EVA4400 can be made by creating new DR-Groups between these arrays

So there does not exist a commercial "data migration license", you can use the "trial" of CA, given you use CV 8.xx

Patrice, I am very sorry for the problems you ran into with the "specialists". We too run sometimes into such problems.

But thanks god, or HP, there exists the ITRC, to find solutions and tips from the real experts like you all.

Once again thank you for answering my questions

best regards
walter

PS: when we have finished the migration (if there does not come up an other problem) I will post it here
