Extending existing LUN on MSA1000

Hi

On our MSA1000, one of our LUN#2 consist of a pool of physical disks of 72.8GB (160 MB/s). Now the diskspace is running out we bought a new disk with 146.8GB and want to add this disk to the same pool.

eg:
show unit 2
:
LUN#2:
disk01 72.8GB 160 MB/s
disk02 72.8GB 160 MB/s
disk03 72.8GB 160 MB/s
disk04 72.8GB 160 MB/s

We bought a new different physical disk of 146.8GB (160 MB/s).

My question is can we safetly add this new disk to this existing LUN#2?

disk05 146.8GB 160 MB/s

using this CLI> expand unit 2 disk05

Please advice.

Re: Extending existing LUN on MSA1000

Hi, yes you can do this but I think it will only use 72GB of the new disk since the RAID striping needs to be consistent.

Re: Extending existing LUN on MSA1000

Hi,

Yes, but it depends upon your RAID and OS configuration.

See this guide for expanding LUNs and warnings:

Hope this helps!

Re: Extending existing LUN on MSA1000

Forgot to include this...

Check the EXTEND and EXPAND commands in the guide. EXPAND adds the disk to the ARRAY. EXTEND adds the disk to LUN.

Re: Extending existing LUN on MSA1000

Hi cnb,

We are using RAID5, so is that means it will only see 72.8GB instead of 146.8GB?

Re: Extending existing LUN on MSA1000

Correct. The smallest disk in a drive array defines the usable capacity. You could mix 72, 146 and 300GB disk drives, but only 72GB would be taken from any disk.

Re: Extending existing LUN on MSA1000

Yes.

If you want to get the most capacity then backup the RAID5 volume, make all of drives 146GB or larger, re-create the RAID5 and restore your data to the newly created RAID5.
