I am trying to find out what the current revision of firmware is for the following disks.
ST336704FC
ST336605FC
At present we have 4x ST336704FC three of which are HP01 and one at HP07
The 6 ST336605FC are all at HP05
We are planning to have the firmware upgraded this weekend but I am a bit dubious of the risks involved, having read through the forums some disk may not return to the up state ans was wondering if this is realy necessary, we have not had any problems with the disks.
The only reason we are going forward with the upgrade is following the advice of one of the Engineers who replaced a failed disk over 2 months ago.
Any assistance would be appreciated.
Kev

SolutionYou are correct that if the firmware has issues with a drive then that drive could be rendered unusable. Because of that, you should take TWO good backups (VERIFIED) of your data!
I would also suggest to PROCEED with the upgrade, that way you are "fully" supported.

Re: FC Disk Firmware
As with almost any upgrade on a server there is always a chance of failure.
So a full backup and a make recovery should be done before.

Re: FC Disk Firmware
Thanks for the response, looks like I will just have to cross my fingers that it all goes smoothly (having taken a good backup first), I am hoping to avoid an all-nighter restoring data on Sunday evening :-)

Re: FC Disk Firmware
kevin,
being that I have had some firmware load failures, I now have HP do about 80% of the upgrades, especially on production equipment. And I have them bring a replacement in case of a failure. This way I don't have to wait up to 4 hours because they are right there :-)

Re: FC Disk Firmware
Speak nicely to your HP Engineer and ask them to bring spare disks "Just in case".

Re: FC Disk Firmware
A few years ago we had the firmware "upgraded" on roughly 200+ old scsi disks, and only a few failed and it wasn't due to the firmware upgrade - the drives wouldn't spin up. For that matter, I can't even remember a disk failing from an upgrade.
Just snap a few backups of your data and especially make_tape_recovery's.
