I just verified that it is set to private loop on both controllers. I then did a full reset just to make sure it boots that way. It does.
I'll post back after I talk to our field engineer.

John,
when their is no cable connected ,the VA71xx will post a warning for the GBIC. The array F/W is not able to determine if this is a GBIC problem or a link problem external to the array.
As you experienced, once the GBIC is removed the message goes away, this is normal behavior and by design.
Your GBIC's itself won't have an issue if this is the only condition under which you see this error.
