HP Disk Array A3639A

I have a Disk Array that has the svc light on and "fault" showing up on the console, no drives are showing faults. I know there is a way to put the console into the service mode so that I can find out what the fault actually is, but can not remember what keys to press.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Re: HP Disk Array A3639A

Hi,

the A3639A is a n-class server (aka rp7400), not an array.

Please tell us the model of the array - there are so many ...

(service light just reminds me on a nike ...)

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: HP Disk Array A3639A

Guess I should have used a flash light

Actual number is A3231A, it's a 10 drive disk array, and I believe I have heard it refered to as a NIKE, it is about 10+ years old.

Re: HP Disk Array A3639A

I guess it is the BBU (battery backup unit), but this is a shot into the dark ...

Run the stm info tool on the array to get more information:

cstm
map
(select the correct device index x)
sel dev x
info
wait
il

Hope this helps!

Re: HP Disk Array A3639A

How do you get to the point to use the system tools? All I have is about 6 options after off of the main screen.

Re: HP Disk Array A3639A

If you have a serial connection to the array you should see the status on the screen.
Sorry, can't remember all the details at the moment.

Try to use the diagnostics (stm) from the HP-UX host as suggested.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: HP Disk Array A3639A

The old Nike's were administered by attaching a terminal to a serial port on the array. There was also a program called "Grid Manager" that could communicate with the array's serial port as well.

Here is a link to the user's manual:

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/DocumentIndex.jsp?contentType=SupportManualтМй=en&cc=us&docIndexId=179111&taskId=101&prodTypeId=12169&prodSeriesId=64091
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: HP Disk Array A3639A

Plug a dumb vt100 terminal (or PC running Hyperterminal) into the serial port on the back. The cable must be a printer or null modem cable. Set the terminal to 9600 8N1 and you can see the array user interface. But with no bad lights on the drives, the problem is going to require some new hardware, perhaps an array card, battery, power supply, etc. If the array seems to be working, immediately get a complete backup of the array. Then contact service. You might try shutting down your system and then power cycling the Nike box. It may clear the problem, stay the same as before, or not come up at all. Assume the worst for planning purposes.
