HP MSA 2040 SAS fans rev up every once in awhile

We have an HP MSA 2040 SAS - installed the first of the year - and every once in awhile I hear the fans rev - it's the sound servers make when they're starting but it's short lived.  by the time I actually get into the server room it's back to normal sounding.  I've looked at the logs and all is clear - no errors, warnings, nothing.  What IS that thing doing??
