Hard drive failure codes

One of the drives in my array failed:

Proliant ML370
One Raid 5 array
Six physical drives

One of the drives failed (orange light brightly lit) and upon server reboot, there were two errors returned by the SCSI controller with recommendations to be replaced:

1721 and 1792

Is this drive totally a failed drive and should be replaced?

I'm trying to determine if the issue is with my supplier or with the server.

Re: Hard drive failure codes

1721 means the drive is going bad - too many bad clusters on the disk. The red light is another indicator. You can verify this information with the array diagnostics, but the result will remain the same: replace the bad drive. Just keep the OS running, pull out the disk and insert a new and similar one - that's it.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Yup, that's what I thought. And the drive is a brand new drive put into service just within the past week.

Is this unusual for a new drive to go bad so soon?

Re: Hard drive failure codes

unusual or not - your drive seems to be bad.
a bad drive have to be replaced - that the way it is. You will have warranty on it, I guess.

Hope this helps!
