How to determine the serial number of a LUN from EMC CXxxx array?

"diskinfo -v" print additional "SCSI conformance level data". For a LUN from symmetrix, the first few numbers are unique for each LUN and can be considered as the "serial numerber". However, for a Clariion LUN, these numbers are the same for each and every LUN from the same array.

Does anyone have a better way of identifying the "serial number" from a Clarrion LUN?

Thanks

Re: How to determine the serial number of a LUN from EMC CXxxx array?

There is no symmetrix software installed on this host, so the inq command is not available.

In general, if only Clariion arrays are installed, the EMC software that comes with the array are typically the Navisphere host agent and powerpath. On the HP-UX platform, most people use pvlink anyway, so powerpath is usually not installed.

Run the emcgrab script from /pub/emcgrab at ftp.emc.com. You'll see the disks a couple of different ways including in the output of inq that comes with emcgrab.

Hi Jitao

if you have symcli installed, you can use the syminq command. In attach you can find a script which I am working on and far from finished, but perhaps helpfull. Note that it is a "home,garden,kitchen"-script (literal translation from Dutch), Im not a scripting nor whatever wizard
Basicaly:
report per lunid correspondant device files configured in VG and devices files not configured in VG
Will be enlarged in the future with the distribution of the dev-files over the installed HBA's and the number of assisted IOs per HBA (helpfull when you don't have active load balancing yet)

powermt display dev=all | grep "Logical device ID" | uniq

NOTE: assuming you have PowerPath the above command may be what you need

Thanks for all the replies. I have assined points for all of you guys, though they are somewhat low.

I guess there is just no simple way to identify the serial number of a Clariion LUN. It looks like powerpath is the simplist way to go. However, not every one use powerpath, especially in HP environments where pvlink is so much familiar to most users.

Hopefully there are other people that have more experience in this regard and post a better way to handle this.

Re: How to determine the serial number of a LUN from EMC CXxxx array?

Jitao,
The reason why you are geting the same serial number for all disks may be because there is a setting in Navisphere, that is set for evety wwn attached to the CX and its named: "Unit Serial Number" and it can be set to "Array" (all LUNS are presented with the same serial number) or "LUN" (each LUN is presented with its own serial number).
I'm not sure what impact could have the host if this setting is changed once the disks are in use (change hw path, etc)... but that may be why you're seing that.

Cecilia
