Incrase disk space by using different size disk set.

Dear Friends..

I have EVA4000 with one disk enclosure. It has 8 disks (146.8 GB) already and plans to increase available 6 disk space from 300 GB hard disks.

I have seen from documents, due to different size disks (300GB) that disk set should put in separate disk group. I have again seen there should have minimum 8 disks for disk group.
So is it not possible to increase disks from 300GB HDD?

Thanks you very much if you can able to give detail answer for this.

Thanks & Regards

Hi,

There's no reason why you can't have different size disks in the same disk group.

The only caveat is that the EVA will (with single sparing) reserve two times the size of the largest disk in the group. This means that if your existing group is currently at capacity, you may have to change the sparing level to None temporarily whilst grouping the disks.

Hope this helps,

Regards,

Re: Incrase disk space by using different size disk set.

During disk group creation or the addition of disk drives to a group, the EVA creates pairs of disks to predefine where mirrored data is stored.

Over time it is possible that a small and a large disk drive gets paired. In that case, the capacity of the larger disk drives is reduced to its smaller partner. This results in loss of capacity.

Re: Incrase disk space by using different size disk set.

Hi Friends..

Please tell me my situation is possible? Is it possible to create separate disk group using six 300 GB HDD without adding these high capacity disks to existing disk group ?

Re: Incrase disk space by using different size disk set.

Hi,

It is not possible to make an Disk Group with six disks, the minimum is eight disks.

You can mix disks when they have the same technology, FC with FC, FATA with FATA.

What technology have in the eight disks? And in the 6 disks?

Thanks,

Re: Incrase disk space by using different size disk set.

Hi,

The existing 8 disks(146.8 GB each) are FC and plan to get same type(FC) 300 GB disks to fill existing 6 space in the disk enclosure.

So what is the best way to fill that existing 6 space ? ( 146 or 300 )

If I buy 300 GB disk then should I have to add them in to existing disk group ?

Thanks & Regards

Yes. Add the 300GB disks to the existing disk group.

hi Jesus Fdez,

Can you explain your answer little bit more ? What is the meaning of two disks ?
