Increase EVA8000 lun size on HP-UX 11.11

Is it possible to cleanly increase the size of a lun that is already being used? We have a database that grows about 10GB a month, so I want to do it right at first. We use VxFs and will assign this lun into it's own VG.

Will this work? If not, what do you do instead?

Solution, add another LUN, present it to your host, add the Lun to your volumegroup

After adding the LUN

ioscan -fnC disk
insf -e
pvcreate -f /dev/rdsk/cxtydz
vgextend vgxx /dev/dsk/cxtydz

You need OnLineJFS to do this totally online if you want to grow the lvol.

We do have OnlineJFS. Does this work with VXFS? I was hoping somone could explain the procedure for this.

Yes it works with VxFS. You can do it easily from 'sam' once the new LUN has been added to the volume group, which can also be done via 'sam'. So create the LUN on the EVA and make it visible to the HP-UX system with Command View, then go into 'sam' to do the rest. It is a GUI, so it is very easy to do.

So you can't grow at all on the same lun? I was hoping I could keep it to one lun per vg. It looks like from what you say, I can grow it "online", but I would still need to grow using a second lun.

The EVA can grow the LUN, but HP-UX's LVM has not yet learned how to deal with dynamic LUNs. You could consider this a limitation of the OS, not keeping up with the hardware, but LVM has had the ability to combine LUNs so that they function as a single entity since its inception. Maybe someday that will change and LVM will catch up to the technology in the EVA, but today you can do what you want by simply creating an new LUN and additing it to the VG, and extending the LUN.
